Cuban
Animal Welfare Projects
Dr. Calm recently traveled to Cuba- her luggage
brimming with medical and surgical supplies. There she
met with veterinarians in practice and academia, and with
protectoras -- people who take in stray dogs, have them
treated for any injury or illness as well as the ever
present parasites, have them neutered and find them homes.
She spent most of her time in Havana but also worked on
horses in Trinidad and with an acupuncture veterinarian
in Sancti Spiritus.
Dr Calm participated in spay neuter clinics
that were held in Havana neighborhoods and sponsored by
a Canadian nonprofit organization www.Spankyproject.org.
The surgical techniques used there were quite different
than the way we do things in Montana, and may be applicable
to high volume spay clinics here. She visited the largest
veterinary hospital in the country and shared with them
some much needed supplies donated by Calm Animal Care,
Merial and MWI veterinary supply, and books donated by
Veterinary Information Network. She also participated
in meetings with the president of the Veterinary Counsul
of Cuba and Dulce Maria Loynaz, an animal welfare group
formed by university professors, working out logistics
of spay neuter projects and trying to smooth the way for
travellers to bring in more supplies for animal care.
